You don’t pay them to publish your book.
They do the marketing for you.
Your books may appear in bookstores, so there is no problem in setting up book signings.
Prestige in knowing your book was chosen to be published.
1. Mainstream Publishers
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Takes longer to publish: most take 1 to 2 years to publish your book after acceptance.
You lose all creative control: they choose the cover and disregard your creative touches.
You earn very little royalties; usually 10% of the cost of the book.
Royalties are paid just twice a year.
2. Print-on-Demand (POD)
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Your book is published as soon as accepted and paid for.
You choose your cover or can design your own.
You set the amount you want to earn on each book
Royalties are paid quarterly.
Book stores will not carry your book unless they guaranteed they can return
damaged or unsold books. (POD Publishers will do this for a hefty yearly fee)
You must do your own marketing if your book is to get known. (This can cost a fortune!)

Mainstream Publishers vs Print-on-Demand

I personally have both types of publishers: Career Press/New Page Books for my books on numerology, and Outskirts Press for Jeff’s and my book about our experiences working in Hollywood, and my dad's Mauldin Swamp Mystery. We highly recommend Outskirts Press for a wonderful POD publishing experience.
